Description
CHOICE, WELL STRUCK SURFACES WITH JUST A WHISPER A WEAR. JUST A SINGLE MS61 COIN GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. CAC. The long-lived Liberty Eagle series of 1838-1907 includes many well-known rarities, as well as many that are underrated in today's market. The 1877-S defintiely falls into the latter category. Only 17,000 Eagles were produced in the San Francisco Mitn during 1877, the vast majority of which have been lost either to exportation or domestic ciculation on the frontier. The '77-S is equally as rare as the (much) lower-mintage 1876-S, as well as the earlier-date 1855-S and 1861-S. Typically offered no finer than VF, the 1877-S is conditionally scarce in EF, rare at the AU level and nearly unobtainable in Mint State. Clearly this is an issue that represents an important buying opportunity for the astute collector or investor, particularly in grades above EF-45.
