Description
GEM SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF A TYPE 1 $20 LIBERTY. Thanks to the discovery of more than 5,000 examples among the treasure of the S.S. Central America - many of which were in the same condition as when they left the San Francisco Mint - the 1857-S has become the leading type candidate in the early Liberty Double Eagle series. No other Type I issue exists in greater numbers at the Mint State level of preservation, and examples pedigreed to this now-famous shipwreck carry with them considerable historical appeal. Most pieces that we handle are sharply struck with bright, rose-gold or orange-gold surfaces. A few MS-66s and MS-67s were also included in the S.S. Central America find, and those coins are among the most beautiful representatives of the type available to today's collectors and investors.
