Description
CHOICE WELL STRUCK LUSTROUS SURFACES. JUST TWO COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. An issue that typically grades no finer than AU-50, the 1867-S is one of the rarer and more underrated coins in the Type II Double Eagle series. The reason why many numismatic buyers fail ot take notice of this delivery is almost certainly because it was produced to the extent of 920,750 pieces - the eighth-highest mintage of the type. Most examples seem to have been melted, however, and those that have survived usually possess at least 10 points of wear. Scarce in the finer AU grades, the '67-S is rare in Uncirculated condition and almost nonexistent above the MS-62 level. In fact, there is only a single MS-63 listed at PCGS and NGC (none are finer, July/2007), and that coin may be the Dallas Bank Collection specimen that sold at auction for $20,700 in late 2001.
