Description
VERY CHOICE SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. JUST TWO MS63 COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. One of several underappreciated rarities in the Type II Double Eagle series, the 1870-S is a very elusive coin despite a sizeable original mintage of 982,000 pieces. We believe that most examples were exported and subsequently melted. The vast majority of coins that have survived did so only after acquiring a generous amount of wear. VF and EF grades are those encountered with most frequency in today's market, although the occasional AU-50 is available to the patient buyer. Beginning in AU-53, the '70-S becomes scarce, and Mint State survivors are decidedly rare. In fact, neither the Dallas Bank Collection nor the various Bass Collection sales included an Uncirculated representative of this important S-mint gold issue.
