Description
LOTS OF MINT LUSTER REMAINS ON THIS FLASHY SPECIMEN. VERY RARE IN THIS STATE OF PRESERVATION. FROM THE INITIAL YEAR OF THE CIVIL WAR. ONLY A SINGLE MS61 COIN FRADED HIGHER. Despite having a similar mintage, the 1861-S is nearly twice as rare as the 1860-O. The typical survivor of this 15,500-piece issue from the San Francisco Mint is a heavily abraded EF. About Uncirculated examples are seen now and then, but the 1861-S is very scarce even in AU-50. There is just a single Mint State coin known and, like the EFs and AUs, it has a generous number of abrasions on both sides. This is one of the most difficult No Motto Eagles to locate with above-average eye appeal.
