Description
MOTTO. CHOICE ORIGINAL LUSTROUS SURFACES. ONLY TWO COINS GRADED HIGHER. The 1866 is an immensely popular issue with collectors and investors alike. It is the first Philadelphia Mint issue of the Type II Double Eagle design, and the only P-mint Twenty of the year. (The 1866-S was produced in both No Motto and Motto formats.) The '66-P is the seventh rarest Philadelphia Mint Double Eagle of the Type II design, and it can be an extremely challenging coin to locate in high grades. In fact, such is the conditionally challenging nature of this issue that even MS-60 is a sufficient grade to qualify a survivor as Condition Census. We believe that, of the 650-750 coins believed extant at all levels of preservation, only 40-45 examples are Mint State.
