Description
WELL STRUCK AND LUSTROUS. THIS IS A VERY SCARCE DATE IN MINT STATE. ONLY TWO COINS GRADED HIGHER. THE HIGHEST GRADED IS A MS62+. Another low-mintage Philadelphia Mint Eagle from the 1840s, the 1846 was produced to the extent of just 20,095 pieces. This issue is similar in overall rarity to the 1845, but it is a bit less rare in high grades due to the discovery of a few AUs with the shipwreck of the S.S. Republic . In an absolute sense, of course, an About Uncirculated 1846 Eagle is a highly elusive coin. Such pieces enjoy particularly strong demand among specialists due to the fact that fewer than five Mint State coins have survived.
