Description
CHOICE WELL STRUCK SURFACES. ONLY 3,530 ORIGINAL STRUCK. LESS THAN 60 BELIEVED TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. ONLY SEVEN COINS GRADED HIGHER. CIVIL WAR YEAR. Although the Philadelphia Mint produced nearly three times as many business strike Eagles in 1864 as it did in 1863, today's collectors have received little benefit from this fact. The 1864 is equally as rare as the lower-mintage 1863, and it has an extremely limited mintage in its own right of just 3,530 pieces. We believe that few, if any 1864 Eagles actually entered circulated at the time of delivery. Rather, the coins were hoarded and most eventually ended up being melted. There is just a sprinkling of survivors in all grades from Fine to the lower reaches of Mint State, and they probably total just 30-40 distinct examples.
