Description
WELL STRUCK, LUSTROUS SURFACES. LESS THAN 75 SPECIMENS EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. NONE HAVE BEEN GRADED IN MINT STATE. A very rare, yet somewhat underrated issue, the '78-CC has an original mintage of just 3,244 pieces. This is the second-lowest delivery in the entire Carson City Mint Eagle series, and the 1878-CC outstrips all other issues in terms of overall rarity with the exception of only the 1870-CC and 1879-CC. Examples in AU and Mint State are also ranked highly, being similar in rarity to identically graded survivors of the 1877-CC. When offered in today's market, the '78-CC is usually well worn for a gold coin; VF is typical. This issue is virtually unobtainable in Mint State.
