Description
VERY CHOICE SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. JUST A SINGLE MS66 GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. SOLE SECOND HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS. A fair number of Mint State 1867 Double Eagles are known in numismatic circles, most of these coins probably tracing their pedigree to a hoard of a few hundred examples that turned up in Europe during the 1960s. Although almost always highly lustrous with a sharp strike by the standards of the Type II design, the typically encountered '67-P Twenty is heavily abraded. For this reason the buyer will almost always experience considerable difficulty locating an example that grades finer than MS-62. In circulated grades, the 1867 is the most frequently encountered P-mint Type II Double Eagle from the 1860s. Most such coins are AU and, as with their Mint State counterparts, they will typically display numerous distracting abrasions.
