Description
VERY FLASHY LUSTROUS SURFACES. THIS IS A VERY SCARCE NEW ORLEANS STRUCK DOUBLE EAGLE IN MINT STATE CONDITION. CONDITION CENSUS WITH THE HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS IS JUST MS62+. After producing a record total (for the facility) of 315,000 pieces in 1851, the New Orleans Mint delivered just 190,000 Double Eagles the following year. Nevertheless, the 1852-O is among the more frequently encountered Twenty-Dollar gold pieces from this branch mint, and it is relatively easy to obtain in lower grades. Beginning at the AU-55 level, however, survivors are scarce-to-rare from a condition standpoint.
