1880 LIBERTY HEAD $20 MS63

VERY CHOICE, SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. TIED FOR HIGHEST GRADED. A desirable, if somewhat underrated issue, the 1880 has an original business strike mintage of just 51,420 pieces. Once considered very elusive even in worn condition, the emergence of several small hoards during the 1990s and early 21st century has made the 1880 relatively obtainable in VF, EF and AU grades. There have been no similar finds of Mint State examples, however, with the result that the 1880 remains scarce-to-rare at that level of preservation. Rarely encountered finer than MS-61, the issue is currently unknown above MS-63 as far as PCGS and NGC are concerned (Juy/2007).
