Description
WELL STRUCK WITH SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. TIED WITH ONE OTHER COIN FOR HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS. The 1853/2 is the only overdate in the entire Liberty Double Eagle series of 1850-1907. Interestingly, this variety remained undiscovered until the 1950s, and it really did not begin winning adherents among advanced collectors until the 1980s. Today, however, there is a growing number of numismatists that recognize the rarity and significance of this overdate. The '53/2 is the rarest P-mint Double Eagle of the Type I design, and it is a coin that is seldom encountered finer than EF-45. The Condition Census begins at the AU-55 grade level, and Doug WInter and Adam Crum ( An Insider's Guide to Collecting Type I Double Eagles , 2002) account for only four Mint State survivors.
