Description
CHOICE SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. VERY SCARCE CARSON CITY DOUBLE EAGLE IN MINT STATE. TIED FOR SECOND HIGHEST GRADED. JUST A SINGLE MS64 GRADED HIGHER. The 1889-CC (30,945 pieces produced) is one of the more frequently encountered Carson City Mint Double Eagles in the numismatic market. While the issue is understandably popular for type purposes, it is still not the most common Twenty-Dollar gold piece produced in the Nevada branch mint. In terms of total number of coins believd to have survived, the 1889-CC is similar in rarity to the 1882-CC and 1892-CC. All three of these issues are more challenging to locate than the 1874-CC, 1875-CC, 1876-CC, 1883-CC, 1884-CC and 1890-CC. Typically offered no finer than AU-58, the '89-CC is scarce in MS-60 and MS-61, very scarce in MS-62 and conditionally rare any finer. In fact, PCGS and NGC combined have seen a mere seven coins at or above the MS-63 grade level. (July/2007).
