Description
GEM FLASHY LUSTROUS SURFACES. TIED WITH ONE OTHER COIN FOR HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS. CAC. With the exception of the high-mintage 1861, the 1865 (351,175 business strikes produced) is the most frequently encountered P-mint Double Eagle struck during the Civil War. In fact, the discovery of a few hundred high-grade examples with the shipwreck of the S.S. Republic means that the 1865 is now one of the more readily obtainable Type I Twenties in Mint State. An attrractive BU or Choice BU example, therefore, would make a lovely addition to a type set of U.S. gold. This is particualrly true if the buyer seeks to avoid the 1857-S (now relatively common thanks to the excavation of the S.S. Central America shipwreck) in favor of a better-date example.
