Description
WELL STRUCK PLANCHET WITH SOME SLIGHT MINT LUSTER STILL APPARENT. LESS THAN 26 COINS BELIEVED TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. There seems to have been little need for new Eagles in the commercial channels along the West Coast in 1864 for the San Francico Mint produced just 2,500 pieces that year. This is one of the rarest issues in the entire No Motto Liberty Eagle series, and there are probably fewer than 25 coins known in all grades. None were on board the S.S. Republic when it sank in 1865, and none have survived in any Mint State grade.
