Description
WELL STRUCK, LUSTROUS SURFACES WITH FROSTY DEVICES. LESS 35 SPECIMENS BELIEVED TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. JUST 3 COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. Discounting the proof-only 1883, 1884 and 1887, the 1882 is the rarest Type III Double Eagle. The original mintage of this issue in business strike format is a mere 571 pieces, and fewer than 35 coins are believed to have survived in all grades. When offered at all, the 1882 typically grades Choice EF or low-end AU. We doubt is as many as five Mint State examples are known.
