Description
A highly lustrous Mint State representative of the most available Liberty Head Eagle issue. The 1901-S Liberty Head Eagle was struck at the San Francisco Mint and displays the classic Christian Gobrecht design that defined the denomination from 1838 through 1907. The obverse features Liberty left-facing, crowned with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, her hair tied with beads and gathered at the back, with thirteen stars surrounding and the date 1901 below. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle with shield grasps an olive branch and arrows beneath the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TEN D., with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above. As a Type coin, the issue is instantly recognizable and remains one of the most collected gold designs in the American federal series. Certified PCGS MS63, this example offers the strong visual appeal collectors expect from a Choice Mint State survivor of this extensively preserved date. The strike is characteristically sharp for the issue, with pleasing definition through Liberty’s hair curls and the eagle’s wings and shield. Bright mint luster enlivens the surfaces, and the rich yellow-gold coloration is especially attractive. Scattered marks are consistent with the assigned grade, as expected for a large gold coin that survived primarily through storage and commercial handling rather than circulation, yet the overall presentation remains handsome and distinctly above the level of a merely average example. Within the Liberty Head Eagle series, the 1901-S occupies a unique position as the most plentiful date and the issue that introduced countless collectors to the denomination. Large quantities were retained for banking and international trade purposes rather than released into prolonged domestic circulation, and many survivors later emerged from European and especially Swiss bank holdings during the mid-20th century. That history explains the unusual availability of the date in Mint State and has made it the classic entry point for collectors seeking a problem-free, visually impressive No Motto Eagle from the final years of the type. The original mintage was 2,812,750 pieces, an enormous figure for the series, and the issue remains famous for its substantial surviving population. Even so, certified examples in Choice Mint State continue to enjoy steady demand from both type collectors and Liberty Head gold specialists. PCGS reports a population of 6,035 pieces in MS63, with 7,012 graded finer. While not rare in an absolute sense, it is among the most liquid and desirable coins in the series because of its historic status, affordability relative to condition, and enduring popularity with collectors assembling high-quality U.S. gold sets. A classic San Francisco Liberty Eagle with abundant luster, appealing yellow-gold surfaces, and broad collector demand, this PCGS MS63 1901-S is an excellent choice for the type buyer and gold specialist alike.
