Description

The 1840 Liberty Seated Quarter with Drapery represents the first year and an important date of the modified obverse design in which additional drapery folds were introduced at Liberty’s elbow. Although the mintage exceeded 188,000 pieces, Mint State examples are notably elusive, and coins approaching Gem quality are recognized as significant condition rarities within the series. This example, certified MS63 by PCGS and housed in an old green holder, has further distinction as the sole representative at this grade awarded a CAC gold sticker. The exact example sold 5 years ago for $22,325 02/21 LE and remains one of the most desirable certified examples available for the No Motto Seated quarter subtype, with only 4 graded finer at PCGS and one at CAC, a MS64+ PCGS CAC available for approximately $30,000. Considering this example eye appeal and luster, we find this more attractive and choice than the aforementioned example, as most would agree. The surfaces show a soft foundational base that transitions into vibrant iridescent color that follows the circumference of the design in a near-continuous ring, displaying shades of amber, violet, cobalt, emerald, rose, golden-orange, sapphire, teal, and magenta depending on angle and lighting. A pearly silver glow emerges beneath the patina when illuminated, and satiny luster becomes visible in sheltered regions of the portrait, gown folds, shield, and wing recesses, producing a reserved but appreciable flash on rotation. With a survival estimate of approximately 350 known examples in Mint State across the type and this being the single MS63 to earn CAC gold recognition, the piece stands out as an important opportunity for collectors focused on early Liberty Seated design nuance, condition census representation, and irreplaceable visual character.
