British Sovereigns are nickel-size gold bullion coins that were struck worldwide beginning in 1816 at the height of the British Empire. Each Gold Sovereign bullion coin contains .2355 ounces of pure gold. Queen Victoria Sovereigns were produced from 1838 – 1901. The head of Queen Victoria that appears on the obverse of these fine gold bullion coins underwent a total of six design changes over the years. Some refer to them as young, middle-age, and older Queen versions. The reverse (back side) design, first introduced in 1816, features Saint George slaying a dragon as designed by a brilliant young Italian engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci. This beautiful classic design remains on the reverse side of all gold sovereigns to this day, almost two hundred years later.
