Description
GEM PROOF SURFACES. LOVELY STEEL GRAY/BLUE PATINA. ONLY 10 OR LESS KNOWN TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. TIED FOR HIGHEST NUMERICAL GRADE AT PCGS. ELIASBERG PEDIGREE. CAC. There are no records in the Federal Archives that give the mintage of the proof 1854 Arrows Dime, and it is highly likely that this figure was never recorded. The Mint did not begin a campaign to market proof coins to collectors in earnest until 1858, and such pieces produced before that year were made in extremely limited quanities to satisfy demand from a few well-connected numismatists. We believe that fewer than 20 proof 1854 Seated Dimes are extant, and their status as represenattives of the short-lived Arrows, Stars Obverse type virtually guarantees continued strong performance in the rare coin market.
