SMALL LETTERS. GEM SURFACES. B-4. ONLY TWO MS66+ COINS GRADED HIGHER. The premier issue in the Small Size Capped Bust Quarter series, the 1831 is an understandably popular coin with numismatists. The original mintage of 398,000 pieces is divided into two major varieties that have garnered recognition in recent editions of R.S. Yeoman's " A Guide Book of United States Coins ." The Small Letters variant is more important than the Large Letters variant because the former only appears on Small Size Capped Bust Quarters of this date. As an issue, the 1831 is easy enough to obtain in an absolute sense, but high-grade Mint State examples can be challenging to locate due to strong type collector pressure.
