Description
GEM SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. VERY SCARCE CARSON CITY TRADE DOLLAR. JUST A SINGLE MS66 GRADED HIGHER. Although an original mintage of 1.3 million pieces is generous by the standards of the Trade Dollar series, the 1874-CC is scarce in all grades since most examples were shipped to the Orient soon after striking. Few contemporary numismatists were interested in acquiring an exampleof this type (let alone this issue), and those that were largely focused their efforts on acquiring a proof from the Philadelphia Mint. In Mint State, the '74-CC is an understandably rare coin, and it is actually one of the most elusive Trade Dollars at that level of preservation. Those examples that survived without wear did so almost solely by chance, and they will typically possess a satiny sheen to the mint finish.
