Description
MEDIUM DATE. GEM PROOF SURFACES WITH RICH BLUE GREEN PATINA. ONLY 15 STRUCK. JUST A SINGLE PR65+ GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. SOLE HIGHEST GRADED WITH CAC STICKER. CAC. All confirmed proof 1846 Seated Halves were struck using the Medium Date logotype. (Breen, 1977, reports having seen a Large Date specimen circa 1953, but this coin has neither been traced nor positively confirmed as a proof.) The original mintage of this early proof issue was not recorded and, as such, has been lost to history. Including examples sold as part of the year's "master" proof sets and those distributed individually, the original mintage could not have exceeded 15 pieces. Fewer than 10 of these coins are believed extant - a total that confirms this issue as a major numismatic rarity.
