Description
CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED SURFACES WITH MINT LUSTER STILL APPARENT. ONLY 125-175 EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. VERY RARE TO SEE IN THIS STATE OF PRESERVATION. According to federal records, the United States Mint struck 4,146 Eagles during calendar-year 1796. Numismatic scholars believe that some of these coins were dated 1795 and that a more appropriate mintage figure for the 1796 is 3,500-4,146 pieces. All 1796 Eagles were struck from a single die pair, and only 125-175 examples are believed to have survived. The median rarity in the Capped Bust Right, Small Eagle Ten-Dollar gold series, the 1796 is considerably rarer than the first-year 1795 but not as rare as the final-year 1797 Small Eagle.
