Description

A richly original Gem Proof Indian Cent, the 1897 Proof cent offered here is a highly appealing survivor certified PCGS PR65RD. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze, this Type 3 Indian Cent presents James B. Longacre’s enduring design in its proof format. The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing the iconic Native American headdress inscribed LIBERTY, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding and the date 1897 below. The reverse carries the denomination ONE CENT in two lines within an oak wreath, tied at the base with a ribbon, with the Union shield above. The type remains one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable designs in all of 19th-century United States numismatics. The present Gem displays the sharp, exacting definition expected of a well-preserved proof striking. Both sides show reflective fields and crisply rendered devices, with strong delineation throughout the portrait, headdress feathers, lettering, shield, and wreath. The certified RD designation is especially desirable, and this example retains vivid original mint color highlighted by warm golden-orange surfaces with attractive accents of magenta, violet, and iridescent blue at select areas. The eye appeal is exceptional, combining technical quality with the kind of vibrant color that advanced copper collectors actively pursue. Proof Indian Cents of the late 19th century occupy an important place in American numismatics. Produced in limited numbers for collectors rather than circulation, these issues represent the finest method of manufacture available to the Mint at the time. By 1897, the Indian Cent series was in its mature final years, with only a little more than a decade remaining before the introduction of the Lincoln Cent in 1909. As such, proof survivors from this period are avidly sought by specialists assembling high-quality date sets, type sets, and certified proof Indian Cent collections. With a proof mintage of just 1,938 pieces, the 1897 is a legitimately limited issue. In PCGS PR65RD, the population stands at only 13 pieces, with just 9 finer, underscoring the coin’s scarcity at this level of preservation and color designation. Fully Red proof Indian Cents become increasingly elusive in Gem grades, and examples with this combination of originality, color, and certified quality enjoy enduring demand in the marketplace. An outstanding opportunity to acquire a low-mintage, Gem Red proof of this classic 19th-century American type, with the visual distinction and certification quality that discerning collectors expect.
