Description

A handsome near-Gem representative of the popular Indian Cent series, this 1867 Type 3 Bronze Cent combines strong visual appeal with the added confidence of CACG certification. The obverse features James B. Longacre’s enduring portrait of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the date 1867 below. On this bronze type, the reverse displays the denomination ONE CENT within an oak wreath crowned by a Union shield, the familiar and beloved format adopted for the post-1864 Indian Cents. Struck at Philadelphia, as were all regular-issue cents of the era, this piece represents the early years of the bronze small cent subtype that would continue through 1909. Certified MS64RB, the coin offers the attractive balance of original mint color and mellowed patina that collectors prize in this designation. Considerable underlying red remains in the protected areas and across portions of the fields, complemented by soft tan-brown coloration over the high points. The strike is pleasing for the issue, with sharp definition through Liberty’s headdress and the reverse wreath, while the surfaces appear notably well preserved for the grade. Overall eye appeal is strong, with the warm red-brown presentation lending this piece an especially inviting character. The 1867 cent is an important early-date issue of the bronze Indian Cent series, a classic and widely collected 19th-century American type. Indian Cents enjoy enduring popularity with both type collectors and date-set specialists, and the post-Civil War issues hold particular historical resonance as products of a nation in reconstruction and economic transition. The Type 3 designation refers to the later legend style used on these bronze cents, a subtle but important distinction appreciated by advanced collectors of the series. While not a key-date issue, the 1867 remains a desirable early bronze Indian Cent, especially in Choice Mint State preservation with original red-brown color. Examples become progressively more elusive as quality and eye appeal improve, and certified pieces at this level are always in demand among collectors seeking premium type coins or high-grade 19th-century small cents. An appealing, well-preserved 1867 Indian Cent with original color, choice surfaces, and excellent collector merit.
