Description

A better-date Denver issue with enduring collector appeal, this 1934-D Peace dollar is offered here in PCGS MS64, a pleasing near-Gem representative of one of the more underrated entries in the final years of the series. Anthony de Francisci’s iconic Peace dollar design remains among the most celebrated motifs in American numismatics. The obverse presents a left-facing Liberty with radiant crown, accompanied by LIBERTY above, IN GOD WE TRVST below, and the date 1934 at the base. The reverse features a perched eagle at rest upon a mountain crag, olive branch below, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLVRIBVS VNVM around, and ONE DOLLAR and PEACE completing the composition. The Latin motto E PLVRIBVS VNVM translates to “Out of many, one.” Certified MS64 by PCGS, this example displays the strong overall eye appeal expected of the grade. The surfaces retain attractive satiny to softly frosted luster, with light golden-silver patina and pale champagne accents enlivening both sides. Strike definition is generally sharp for the issue, with Liberty’s central hair detail and the eagle’s plumage showing solid delineation, while minor abrasions and scattered marks are consistent with a large silver coin preserved just shy of the Gem threshold. The visual impression is notably pleasing, especially for a date that is often encountered with less balanced surface quality. The 1934-D occupies an interesting position in the Peace dollar series. Although its mintage of 1,569,500 pieces is not low in absolute terms, the issue has long been recognized as surprisingly elusive in higher Mint State preservation. Q. David Bowers aptly noted that the coin seems to have been “forgotten or overlooked,” with few documented hoards reaching the market and no widely recognized supply from original mint-sealed bags. Rather than being saved in quantity, the mintage appears to have filtered gradually into commerce, limiting the number of premium survivors available to later collectors. As a result, the 1934-D has earned respect as a semi-key Better Date in the series, particularly in Choice and Gem Mint State grades. PCGS reports a population of 1,603 examples in MS64, with 867 graded finer. While obtainable in circulated condition, the issue becomes markedly more desirable in upper Mint State, where demand from Peace dollar specialists remains consistently strong. This is precisely the kind of certified example that appeals to collectors seeking a wholesome, original coin for a high-quality date set without crossing into the much more expensive Gem tier. An attractive and properly graded 1934-D Peace dollar, this PCGS MS64 combines better-date status, historical intrigue, and handsome visual character in a format well suited to both advanced type collectors and dedicated Peace dollar enthusiasts.
