To counteract the rising cost of silver, the U.S. Mint stopped including silver in circulating coins in 1965, except the Kennedy half dollar which maintainted a 40% silver composition until 1970. This retrospective collection features four classic U.S. silver coins with random dates: a Kennedy Half Dollar, a Washington Quarter, a Roosevelt Dime, and a Jefferson Nickel. The Kennedy Half Dollar was struck between 1965-1970, so it has a 40% silver composition. The Washington Quarter was first created for the 200th Anniversary of George Washington's birthday, and was struck in 90% silver until 1964. The Roosevelt Dime was introduced in 1946 to honor the passing of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and was struck in silver until 1964. The Jefferson Nickel has never normally been struck in silver, but during World War II it was actually struck with 35% silver to preserve nickel for the war effort. Silver nickels have not circulated since! Since the discontinuation of silver coinage over the past 50 years, many of the original silver coins have been melted down for their silver content, making them hard pieces to find.
