Design of the Silver Eagle Coins Each 2000 American Silver Eagle weighs one Troy ounce, has a reeded edge, is 2.98mm thick, and a diameter of 40.6mm. The proofs are struck from 0.999% silver and have a distinct mirror finish. The obverse features the design of Lady Liberty from the Walking Liberty half dollar. This design was created by Adolph Weinman and is one of the most iconic coin designs in American history. The reverse is a modernized version of the Heraldic Eagle designed by John Mercanti.
