The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was begun in 1986. The year of striking the coin is on the lower periphery.The reverse depicts a Heraldic Eagle with upswept wings and a shield covering its body. There are 13 stars arranged above it and there are arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The upper periphery displayed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the lower had “1 OZ.
