Description
Pre-1859 proof gold coins are extremely rare, and the 1855 $3 Princess is the very epitome of this statement! The actual mintage is unknown, as sales to collectors was not an official policy until that year. From the book, "United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, Part I," John Dannreuther estimates that only five proofs were struck, of which four are known, with this being the lowball. Easily identified as a proof by the partial designer initials on the truncation of the bust, and the missing detail on the central bow on the reverse. CAC approved! - Three Dollar
