Per Garrett and Guth's "Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933", " The 1869 eagle has an irresistibly low mintage of 1,830 pieces, making it extremely popular with date collectors... the 1869 compares favorably the other scarce dates such as 1858, 1859-O, 1863-S, and 1866-S With Motto eagles, Extremely Fine examples are very rare, and About Uncirculated examples are extremely rare."
Walter Breen's "Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins" states, "Very rare."
David Akers' "United States Gold Coins - An Analysis of Auction Records - Volume V - Eagles 1795-1933" states, "As one would suspect from the low mintage, the 1869 is very rare in any condition, roughly comparable to the 1864, 1865 and 1867 and marginally less rare than the 1863. It is more difficult to obtain than either the 1866 or 1868."
