As a coin from a mint historically plagued by bag marks and weak strikes, this specimen ranks among a handful of the finest survivors of the date. It combines bold cartwheel flash, sharp details, and superior eye appeal—as well as thick, icy frost on the devices and deep mirrored pools in the fields—representing the 1879-O issue at its finest.
Out of its mintage of 2,887,000, this piece is one of the three finest known in DMPL. PCGS has graded only 2 as MS65+ DMPL with a mere 1 finer. There are no MS65+ DMPL at NGC. There have been only 18 auction appearances of 1879-O Morgan dollars graded MS65DMPL to MS66DMPL (both PCGS and NGC) from 2002 to 2024. However, there have been no auction sales of MS65+ DMPL examples. That suggests that the current offering is a "fresh coin," one that has been in a private collection for decades—or perhaps even longer!
