1911 $2.50 Indian Head Proof, Philadelphia issue, certified PCGS PR67 and approved by CAC, Cert. #3292573. A remarkable Matte Proof Quarter Eagle from one of the most artistically distinctive U.S. gold series, this specimen represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a prized early 20th-century gold rarity with elite eye appeal and strong collector recognition.
The 1911 Proof Quarter Eagle is the second most obtainable date in the Proof Indian Head series by certified population, yet that status is highly relative. With a tiny original mintage of just 191 pieces, every surviving example is a legitimate rarity. These coins were produced during a period when relatively few collectors could afford Proof gold, and the Mint’s matte or sandblast finish was not widely embraced by buyers accustomed to earlier brilliant Proof formats. As a result, the series remains undervalued in relation to its rarity, history, and aesthetic importance.
Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Head Quarter Eagle is famous for its innovative incuse design, with devices sunk below the fields rather than raised above them. This bold departure from traditional U.S. coinage gives the type a sculptural, medallic character unlike any other American gold issue. On Matte Proof examples, the design is further elevated by the delicately textured surfaces, which create a refined, velvety appearance and reward careful viewing.
This PR67 example stands among the finest collectible survivors for the date. The matte surfaces seen on these proofs are notoriously fragile, as even slight contact can leave distracting bright marks. Many examples encountered today have been impaired by dipping or mishandling, often losing the rich originality that advanced collectors seek. By contrast, premium pieces at this level are prized for their exceptional preservation, superior texture, and original color. This coin should display the attractive golden to green-gold character so desirable for the issue, a look that complements the sandblast finish beautifully.
Population data confirms its scarcity in upper grades. PCGS reports just 26 examples at this level, with only 6 graded finer. The added CAC endorsement further reinforces the coin’s quality within the grade and enhances its desirability among discerning collectors.

Second most common certified date in the Proof Indian Head Quarter Eagle series, though rare in absolute terms
Coveted for its low mintage, historic matte finish, and elusive high-grade preservation
Ideal for advanced type collectors, Proof gold specialists, and buyers seeking a standout early U.S. gold rarity
A high-end 1911 Proof Indian Head Quarter Eagle combines rarity, condition, artistry, and numismatic importance in a way few classic U.S. gold coins can match. With its strong certification, CAC approval, and outstanding grade, this example would make a compelling addition to a sophisticated collection of Proof gold or rare American coinage.
