A highly desirable Carson City Trade Dollar, further distinguished by a Doubled Die Reverse and attractive peripheral toning.
This 1876-CC Trade Dollar represents one of the most avidly collected issues in the short-lived but immensely popular Trade Dollar series. The obverse features Liberty seated left on a bale of merchandise, extending an olive branch, with a sheaf of wheat behind and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below; the date 1876 appears at the base, framed by 13 stars. The reverse displays the heraldic eagle with spread wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch beneath the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon above and the denomination and fineness expressed below as 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE TRADE DOLLAR. The Carson City mintmark appears below the eagle, and this example is additionally identified as a Doubled Die Reverse, an important and sought-after variety for specialists.
Certified PCGS MS60, this Mint State survivor retains full design integrity and an appealing original appearance. The surfaces show the expected marks for the assigned grade, yet the coin remains sharply defined with ample remaining luster. Particularly notable is the handsome toning that gathers around the borders in shades of blue, violet, gold, and amber, providing a vivid frame to the softly lustrous centers. The overall visual effect is especially pleasing and gives the piece an individuality that stands out readily among lower-end Mint State Carson City examples.
Trade Dollars were introduced in 1873 for commerce in the Orient, where heavier silver coins were preferred in international trade. Although the denomination later became controversial in domestic circulation, the series has long attracted collectors for its bold size, distinctive design, and relatively short run. Carson City issues hold a special place within the series and within American numismatics more broadly, linking the coinage directly to the silver-rich mining frontier of the American West. The 1876-CC is a popular branch mint issue from this storied Nevada facility, and varieties such as the Doubled Die Reverse add another layer of appeal for advanced collectors.
With a mintage of 509,000 pieces, the 1876-CC is not a low-mintage rarity in absolute terms, but it is a perennially popular issue because of its Carson City origin and strong collector demand. This certified example is of particular significance for variety collectors: the population for this attribution is just 1 finer with only 9 higher reported, underscoring its scarcity in certified form and its importance within the specialized census. Carson City Trade Dollars with original color, Mint State preservation, and a recognized variety designation are consistently in demand.
An appealing and important Western silver dollar, this 1876-CC Doubled Die Reverse Trade Dollar offers the rare combination of Carson City prestige, certified Mint State status, and standout toning that advanced collectors prize.
