Description

Insanely undervalued 1865 Transitional with the normal, adopted 1866 obverse and reverse, and minted with the normal, adopted 90% silver, 10% copper alloy. The $5 and $10 gold versions are each worth $400,000-plus but the silver half has received no publicity hence the absurdly low price.

Just seven-plus minted as per Breen Enycl (p 404). Total NGC/PCGS population just 14 in all grades combined with many duplications. We could trace just six unique coins.

$8,625 auction sale for this actual slab (click the fourth image). But it might be a $200,000 coin if PCGS said "Transitional" instead of just "J-429", which relegates it to the obscure pattern section. Almost all other patterns have wacky, rejected designs but this fascinating 1865 rarity has the adopted 1866 obverse and reverse and is minted in the adopted 90% silver and 10% copper alloy, which makes it a true Transitional..

Thus, you could insist that no set of Seated halves would be complete without this historical Transitional rarity.

High-end coin in a historical 1990 GEN 3.0 holder, so it could easily upgrade today, even more so after professional conservation.

Very few and light marks for PR62. Boldly struck. Deep toning transforms into gorgeous, much lighter gold-olive when it catches the light.

Mint archives prove that some if not all were minted in December 1865, so the coin was produced just after the Civil War ended.
