1976-D $1 Type 1
SKU: 49240453
A conditionally scarce Superb Gem from the short-lived Eisenhower dollar series, this 1976-D Bicentennial Dollar represents the scarcer Type 1 reverse in an appealing PCGS MS67 holder with CAC approval.
Struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel clad composition, this issue bears the dual date 1776-1976 commemorating the nation’s Bicentennial. The obverse features Frank Gasparro’s left-facing portrait of Dwight D. Eisenhower, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the dual date below, with the Denver mintmark positioned at the truncation. The reverse presents Dennis R. Williams’s celebrated Bicentennial design: the Liberty Bell superimposed before the moon, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR encircling, and E PLURIBUS UNUM at right. As a Type 1 reverse, the lettering displays the bold, thicker style characteristic of the early 1976-D production.
The present coin is certified MS67 by PCGS and further endorsed by CAC, a combination that immediately elevates its standing among high-grade clad type and Eisenhower dollar specialists. Surfaces are sharply defined for the issue and retain strong satiny to softly frosted mint luster, complemented by attractive champagne-silver centers with pale golden peripheral warmth. Contact marks are notably restrained for a large-format clad dollar, and the fields and devices present the clean, orderly appearance expected of a premium Superb Gem. Eye appeal is strong throughout, with the reverse especially attractive in hand thanks to the broad open fields and well-balanced contrast across the Liberty Bell and lunar motif.
The 1976-D Type 1 dollar occupies a distinctive position within the Eisenhower series. In 1976, the Denver Mint produced Bicentennial dollars with two reverse hub styles: the Type 1 with heavier, thicker lettering, and the Type 2 with thinner, sharper lettering. Although both are obtainable in lower circulated and entry-level Mint State grades, the Type 1 is encountered less often than the Type 2, and truly elite survivors are elusive. That circumstance has made the issue a popular target for collectors assembling high-grade registry-quality Ike sets, as well as for specialists focused on Bicentennial coinage.
In the present grade, the coin becomes appreciably more select. PCGS reports a population of 26 examples in MS67, with only 3 finer, confirming that this is a genuinely upper-end representative despite the issue’s overall availability in lesser preservation. CAC approval adds an additional layer of market confidence, signaling solid quality for the assigned grade. The CAC Population is a mere 4 coins with none finer. While not a key-date in the absolute sense, it is a condition rarity within the series and a notably desirable example of the scarcer Type 1 reverse format.
A premium-certified and visually appealing Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar, this 1976-D Type 1 MS67 CAC offers advanced collectors an outstanding combination of grade, scarcity, and registry-level desirability.
