A scarce Carson City Seated Half with certified near-Gem quality and CAC affirmation.
The 1875-CC Liberty Seated Half Dollar represents one of the more desirable branch mint issues of the later Seated Liberty series, pairing the romance of Carson City coinage with strong Mint State collector demand. Obverse: Liberty is seated on a rock, supporting a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY and holding a pole topped by a cap, with thirteen stars around and the date 1875 below. Reverse: a heraldic eagle with shield displays olive branch and arrows, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL., with the CC mintmark prominently placed beneath.
Certified PCGS MS64 and endorsed by CAC, this example sits at the threshold of Gem quality, a grade level that remains highly collectible and increasingly elusive with superior originality. The issue is typically well struck, and this piece should be appreciated for the crisp definition expected of the date, along with satiny to frosty mint luster and notably clean surfaces for the assigned grade. Eye appeal is an important component for Carson City halves, and the CAC approval further supports the coin’s quality within the grade. Any subtle silver-gray, pale champagne, or light peripheral toning only enhances its visual presence if seen on the coin.
Struck at the famed Carson City Mint, the 1875-CC half dollar carries the enduring appeal that attends all 19th-century CC coinage. The mintmark alone commands strong attention from collectors, and within the Seated Liberty half dollar series, Carson City issues occupy a special place thanks to their Western heritage, lower production compared to many Philadelphia emissions, and broad crossover demand from both type and mintmark collectors. With a mintage of 1,008,000 pieces, this is not a low-mintage issue in an absolute sense, but it is decidedly more challenging in true Mint State than the mintage figure might suggest.
The date is widely regarded as semi-scarce, and while examples are available in lower Mint State grades, demand remains robust for premium certified pieces. PCGS reports a population of 30 in MS64, with only 12 graded higher, a meaningful statistic that underscores the coin’s limited supply at this level and above. The 1875-CC becomes truly rare in Gem grades, making an MS64 CAC example especially appealing to collectors seeking an attractive, upper-end representative without venturing into the far more difficult and expensive MS65 tier. As a Carson City issue, it also enjoys sustained market recognition well beyond the Seated Liberty specialty.
A handsome, better Mint State Carson City half dollar with strong certification, CAC quality, and lasting collector appeal.
