Description

Draped Bust Large Eagle 1 Dollar 1798 PCGS AU Details, Pointed 9, Wide Date, B-19, BB-106, R.5!

Nicely preserved. Great fields! Beautiful old toning! Strong underlying mint luster! Super attractive piece!

Barely any perceptible wear or friction is to be found anywhere on this totally original Choice AU example. Warm olive-gray toning graces both sides with a superior strike for the type.

Bowers Die State IIII. A vertical bisecting die crack descends from the rim above E in LIBERTY through 1 in the date to the dentil below. Original warm-gray toning deepens at the margins. Some faint struck-in grease streaks and minor hairlines exist in the right obverse field, but the PCGS Details grade recognizes a toned over scratch between A and T of STATES that continues into the field stars. The coin is otherwise pleasing and well-centered, displaying About Uncirculated definition and significant eye appeal.

This coin came originally from Heritage January 2007 Orlando, Florida (FUN) Signature Coin Auction #422, Lot #5125. It was graded NGC AU-55 at that time.

Bowers-Borckardt Die State III. The Images of the coin attached back-to-back for comparison. So, judge for yourself, but it looks like identical or rather the same coin to me. The small Obverse scratch either wasn't there, or NGC Graded it 55 with the scratch, recognizing it as minor and within the quality acceptance criteria for a straight AU grade. Here is the description from Heritage.

A scarce die marriage noted for its bisecting vertical die crack through the 1 in the date. This satiny golden-brown and lilac example retains significant luster within the eagle's wings, and both sides are clean aside from a brief horizontal mark near the chin.

Extremely Rare. Graded by NGC in this Grade only 1! Only 21 coins known total.

Base PCGS# 6877.
