A top-grade, fully brilliant Franklin Half Dollar, this 1952-D 50C is certified PCGS MS67 FBL and stands as an exceptional Denver Mint representative of the short-lived but perennially popular Franklin series.
Designed by John R. Sinnock, the obverse presents a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin with LIBERTY around the upper border, IN GOD WE TRUST below, and the date 1952 at right. The reverse features the Liberty Bell in bold central relief, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR along the periphery, E PLURIBUS UNUM at left, and a small eagle at right, added to satisfy the statutory requirement that the half dollar bear that emblem. The Denver mintmark appears above the bell yoke, identifying this as a product of the Rocky Mountain branch mint.
The present piece displays the strong strike quality collectors demand for the designation, with full, uninterrupted lower bell lines confirming its FBL status. Frosty silver-white luster dominates both sides, enlivened by delicate peripheral toning in soft gold, champagne, and intermittent blue-violet accents. The fields remain impressively clean for the grade, while the devices are sharply rendered and highly attractive. Overall eye appeal is notably superior, combining technical preservation with the kind of original surface character advanced Franklin specialists seek.
The Franklin Half Dollar, struck from 1948 through 1963, remains one of the most actively collected 20th-century U.S. silver series. Its compact set size, classic patriotic design, and frequent pursuit in high-grade certified condition have made it a favorite among type collectors and date-and-mint enthusiasts alike. Within the series, Denver issues are well known for variable strike quality, making premium Full Bell Lines examples especially desirable. A 1952-D in such an elite state of preservation is far removed from the typical survivor encountered in lower Mint State grades.
Certified examples at this level are scarce. PCGS reports a population of just 10 coins in MS67 FBL, with only 1 finer, underscoring the issue’s select status at the upper reaches of the condition census. While the 1952-D is not a key date by mintage, truly high-end, fully struck examples are elusive and enjoy consistent demand from registry participants and advanced collectors pursuing best-in-class Franklin halves.
A visually compelling, conditionally rare Franklin Half Dollar, this 1952-D PCGS MS67 FBL offers elite certification, excellent originality, and strong registry-caliber appeal.
