From the Furnace Run Fugio Cent Collection, 106 coins, 53 different varieties! Offered by Shawn A. Yancey from Earlycoppercoins: 1787 N10-T Fugio Cent PCGS EF40 1 Over 1 STATES UNITED W6705 R5-. From the Stacks Bowers sale of the Sydney F. Martin collection, sold on 08/19/23 as lot #8458, and described as: “Above Average Newman 10-T Fugio Cent - 1 Over Horizontal 1. 1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 10-T, W-6705. Rarity-5-. STATES UNITED, 1/Horizontal 1. EF-40 (PCGS). 150.8 grains. A lovely example, golden brown with lighter olive brown on the worn high points of the devices and legends. Well struck and well-centered on a well-made flan, absent the usual planchet flaws that can plague Fugio cents, though the Newman 10-T combination is usually found on better than average planchets. A few marks on the surfaces may be found, a thin, worn-out old hairline meandering through the sun's rays until it stops at the top of the gnomon. This example is ranked number 9 on the Retz census, and though finer examples exist, they can be in a wholly different value range, such as the PCGS AU-55 Pierre Fricke specimen that sold for $26,400 in our November 2021 Baltimore Sale. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Sussex Collection, June 1990, lot 4009; Donald Scarinci Collection, November 2010.” So although this coin has a $10,000 PCGS Price Guide value, it sold for just $4,320 in that 2023 auction. WHY? Because it looks nothing like the photos on the Stacks Bowers website! In hand, this coin has outstanding color and eye appeal, and any surface distractions are minor at best. Certainly a PLUS coin for this variety; I would love to own this example myself! PCGS certification# 878086.40/46763840.
