A Gem Mint State representative of the early No Motto Liberty Seated half dollar series, this 1843 Philadelphia issue in PCGS MS65 offers exceptional quality for a type and date that remains perennially popular with advanced type collectors and Seated specialists alike.
Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Seated design is among the most elegant motifs in 19th-century American coinage. The obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock, supporting a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY and holding a pole topped by a cap, with the date 1843 below and stars encircling the border. The reverse features a powerful heraldic eagle with shield, clutching olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOL. This 1843 issue was struck at Philadelphia and, as expected for the date, presents the classic No Motto format that defines the earlier portion of the series.
At the Gem MS65 level, this piece stands comfortably within the Condition Census tier for the issue and displays the strong visual appeal collectors expect from a premium certified example. Luster is full and attractive, with frosty to softly satiny brilliance flowing across both sides. The strike is well executed for the type, with pleasing definition through Liberty’s gown and the eagle’s central features. Surfaces are notably well preserved for a Seated half dollar of this era, showing only the limited, carefully scattered marks consistent with the assigned grade. Any delicate toning present serves to complement the originality of the coin, enhancing its already impressive eye appeal.
The 1843 half dollar holds an important place within the Liberty Seated series. With a mintage of 3,844,000 pieces, it was the largest production figure seen for the denomination since the type’s introduction in 1839, a total not surpassed until 1854. As such, the date is well known to collectors as a plentiful issue in circulated grades and one that can be located in lower Mint State without undue difficulty. That said, truly choice and Gem survivors remain far more elusive than the raw mintage suggests, particularly when originality, strike, and surface quality are all considered together.
Collector demand for Liberty Seated half dollars remains strong, driven by the series’ historical depth, long production span, and the aesthetic appeal of Gobrecht’s design. In certified Gem condition, this issue becomes decidedly more select. PCGS reports a population of just 5 coins in MS65, with only 4 finer, underscoring the coin’s scarcity at this elevated level. While not a key or semi-key date in the absolute sense, it is an issue that becomes meaningfully conditionally rare in Gem preservation, making examples such as this especially desirable for registry-minded buyers and discerning type collectors.
A high-grade, highly collectible early Seated half dollar, this 1843 PCGS MS65 combines historic 19th-century charm, superior preservation, and notable conditional scarcity in a package certain to command attention.
