1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5 Capped Bust Half Eagle PCGS MS63
1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5
SKU: 25014948
An attractive and comparatively obtainable early Capped Bust Half Eagle, this 1810 Large Date, Large 5 is a Choice Mint State representative of one of the most collected early gold types in American numismatics.
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the issue features the classic Capped Bust Left design. The obverse presents Liberty facing left, her hair flowing beneath a soft cap inscribed LIBERTY, with the date 1810 below and a ring of stars around the perimeter. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in its talons, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding, and the denomination expressed as 5 D. below. This is the Large Date, Large 5 variety, a distinctive pairing that has often been mischaracterized in the marketplace as a “Tall 5.” In fact, the numeral 5 seen here is different in style—shorter and broader than the Tall 5 used on certain other issues of the era—making it unique within the 1807-1812 Capped Bust Half Eagle series.
Certified PCGS MS63, this coin offers the level of preservation and visual appeal that advanced type and early gold collectors actively pursue. The strike is pleasing for the issue, with strong central detail on Liberty’s portrait and the reverse eagle, while the surfaces show the moderate marks expected of the grade without distracting impairments. Rich original yellow-gold color is evident throughout, complemented by satiny to softly frosted mint luster that rotates evenly across both sides. The overall presentation is highly attractive, with the wholesome, original appearance so important in early federal gold.
Within the early Half Eagle series, the 1810 Large Date, Large 5 enjoys strong collector support as a representative issue from the popular 1807-1812 Capped Bust type. John Reich’s design marks an important transitional period in U.S. gold coinage, combining bold portraiture with the heraldic eagle reverse that defined the nation’s earliest federal gold emissions. Although the total mintage for 1810 Half Eagles was 100,287 pieces, that figure includes multiple varieties; survivors over two centuries later are a fraction of the original production, especially in true Mint State.
In terms of rarity, this variety is regarded as one of the more obtainable issues of the type, roughly comparable in overall availability to the 1807, 1809/8, and 1812 Half Eagles. Even so, genuinely Choice Uncirculated examples remain scarce in an absolute sense, as is the case with virtually all early U.S. gold. PCGS reports a population of just 52 examples in MS63, with only 46 finer, underscoring the limited supply available to collectors seeking certified upper-grade pieces. While not a key-date issue, it is a highly collectible and important early gold variety with enduring demand from both type buyers and specialists in early federal series.
A handsome, problem-free early gold coin with strong eye appeal and certified Choice Mint State quality, this 1810 Large Date, Large 5 Half Eagle represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a desirable survivor from the formative years of the United States Mint.
