1911-D $2.50 Strong D
SKU: 705185505
A sharply defined, premium Gem example of the coveted 1911-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle, certified CACG MS65 with the important Strong D attribution.
This historic $2.50 gold piece represents one of the most celebrated issues in the Indian Head Quarter Eagle series. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait in incuse relief, encircled by 13 stars, with LIBERTY above and the date 1911 below. The reverse presents a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS. The mintmark appears at left on the reverse, and in this case is the desirable Strong D, boldly defined and readily apparent.
The present Gem displays the bold striking quality that advanced collectors actively seek for this issue. Both sides exhibit notably sharp definition for the type, with the headdress details, portrait contours, and reverse eagle feathers showing exceptional clarity. Rich orange-gold to honey-gold coloration enhances the surfaces, while full mint luster radiates across each side with impressive vitality. Surface preservation is entirely consistent with the MS65 designation, and the coin offers the kind of superior eye appeal that justifies its premium status within this challenging early 20th-century gold series.
The 1911-D quarter eagle is a key issue in the Pratt gold series and one of the most famous branch-mint Indian Head gold coins struck for circulation. Collectors have long recognized the date as a cornerstone of the set, and the Strong D variety holds a particularly important place in the marketplace. Unlike the more often encountered Weak D pieces, Strong D examples are distinctly favored for their clearer mintmark and their stronger overall production characteristics. As a result, they enjoy sustained demand from specialists assembling high-end date-and-mintmark sets as well as type collectors seeking a standout representative of this innovative incuse design.
Within the series, the 1911-D is a classic key-date coin whose popularity far exceeds its already limited availability in upper Mint State grades. Gem-quality survivors are eagerly pursued, and examples combining sharp strike, vibrant luster, and CACG certification are especially appealing. The Strong D attribution further elevates the coin’s collectibility, placing it among the most desirable formats in which this celebrated issue can be obtained.
An impressive and thoroughly desirable Gem Strong D 1911-D Quarter Eagle, offering rarity, technical quality, and outstanding visual appeal in equal measure.
