1861-S $2.50 AU58 PCGS San Francisco Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The 1861-S Liberty Head quarter eagle is a celebrated Civil War–era San Francisco issue whose tiny 24,000-piece mintage and estimated survival of only about 85 coins place it firmly among the great condition rarities of the Type One quarter eagle series. With a CAC example costing double the price, this AU58 example is an extraordinary near-Mint State survivor, displaying rich original yellow-gold surfaces that retain vibrant, frosty luster across both sides with a faint semi-reflective flash in the fields. Liberty’s portrait is sharply impressed and the surfaces are notably clean for the grade, with only a few microscopic ticks visible under magnification and no distracting spots or discoloration, a major attribute for this notoriously elusive San Francisco date. Eye appeal is exceptional, with the coin presenting more like a low-end Mint State piece than a circulated example, and it is easy to understand why David Akers long considered the issue underrated in the standard references. Scarce in all grades and excessively rare any finer, we have always been a major fan of this date and this is the highest grade example we have offered. In fact we probably sold about 6 or 7 of this date in a span a year and a half. With a PCGS population of 10 and just 6 finer, alongside a PCGS Price Guide value of $17,500, this is the kind of established rarity that rarely surfaces.
