1872 2C, RB
SKU: 61814855
A choice near-Gem 1872 Two Cent Piece, certified PCGS MS64 RB and further endorsed by CAC, offering sharp definition, appealing original color, and strong type-coin and date-collector interest.
The obverse presents the familiar Civil War–era shield motif of the two-cent series, with a draped scroll above bearing the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, flanked by ornamental foliage and crossed arrows, with the date 1872 below. The reverse displays a bold central 2 within a wreath of wheat and laurel, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination CENTS. Introduced in 1864, this short-lived copper denomination occupies a singular place in U.S. numismatics as the first federal coinage to carry the motto In God We Trust.
Graded MS64 Red Brown by PCGS and approved by CAC, this example stands at the threshold of Gem quality. The surfaces show notably strong preservation for the issue, with only minor marks commensurate with the assigned grade. Rich golden-brown color is accented by warmer coppery-orange highlights, producing a lively and attractive appearance on both sides. The strike is pleasing overall, with crisp definition in the shield lines, wreath elements, and legends, while remaining original mint luster glows beneath the mellowed patina. The visual effect is both natural and highly desirable.
The 1872 issue is one of the better-collected dates in the Two Cent series. Although the denomination itself was struck for only a brief period from 1864 through 1873, it remains popular with collectors drawn to its historical importance, distinctive design, and compact set size. Philadelphia coined 65,000 pieces in 1872, a low mintage by the standards of regular-issue 19th-century minor coinage, helping secure the date’s longstanding status as a scarcer and more desirable late-series emission. It is widely regarded as a semi-key issue within the series and becomes especially sought after in Mint State.
Population data further supports its appeal. PCGS reports just 42 examples in MS64 RB, with only 36 graded finer in this color designation. Combined with CAC approval, this piece occupies an especially attractive position for collectors seeking quality, originality, and third-party validation in a better-date two-cent piece.
An impressive and historically significant survivor from a low-mintage year, this 1872 Two Cent Piece offers the eye appeal, certification, and collector demand that make it a standout addition to any advanced small-cent, type, or 19th-century U.S. coin cabinet.
