A landmark first-year proof issue and the rarest Proof Walking Liberty half dollar of the series.
This 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, struck at Philadelphia and certified PCGS PR66, represents the celebrated return of proof half dollar coinage after a 20-year hiatus, the first such pieces produced since 1915. Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic obverse depicts Liberty striding toward the rising sun, draped in the American flag and carrying branches of laurel and oak, with LIBERTY at the border, IN GOD WE TRUST at right, and the date 1936 below. The reverse features a boldly rendered perched eagle on a mountain crag, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, E PLURIBUS UNUM to the left, and HALF DOLLAR below. Few 20th-century American silver designs rival the artistic strength and enduring collector appeal of this classic type.
The present PR66 displays the sharply defined, reflective character expected of a premium proof survivor. Bright silver-white surfaces are complemented by strong field reflectivity and notably crisp central detail for the issue. The strike is pleasing overall, with Liberty’s drapery lines and the reverse eagle’s feather definition showing well. As often seen on 1936 proofs, a touch of softness may be present in isolated high points, but the coin retains excellent eye appeal, with clean mirrored fields and an overall presentation fully consistent with its Gem proof designation. The look is essentially brilliant, without significant toning, offering the luminous, original appearance many specialists prefer.
Within the Walking Liberty half dollar series, the 1936 proof is a major key as well as a historic first-year proof emission. Proof half dollars resumed in 1936 alongside the revival of proof coinage more broadly, and this issue immediately assumed an outsized role in the market due to its tiny production and status as the opening entry in the short proof subset of the series. With only 3,901 pieces struck, it has the second-lowest mintage of any proof coin from the 1936–2000 era, exceeded in scarcity only by the 1936 Washington quarter. No cameo examples are known, and pieces grading PR67 or finer are famously elusive.
Collector demand remains exceptionally strong. The 1936 proof half dollar is scarce in all grades and genuinely rare in Gem preservation. PCGS reports a population of 358 in PR66, with only 127 numerically finer, a structure that confirms both its availability at this level and the steep challenge of locating superior examples. As the undisputed key proof issue of the Walking Liberty series, it enjoys sustained interest from advanced type collectors, proof specialists, and registry participants alike.
A visually impressive and historically significant Gem Proof, this 1936 Walking Liberty half dollar offers an outstanding opportunity to acquire the premier rarity of the proof Walkers in a highly collectible PCGS-certified grade.
