1843 $10 Liberty Head Eagle — PCGS AU58 (Philadelphia, No Motto). A rare and important pre–Civil War gold eagle from the Gobrecht-designed Liberty Head series, this 1843 Philadelphia issue is elusive in any grade and exceptionally challenging at the About Uncirculated level. Specialists regard the date as rarer overall than the 1842-O and 1843-O and comparable in scarcity to the 1840, 1841, and both 1842 varieties. High-grade survivors are few, with most known examples clustered in Very Fine. AU coins are genuinely rare, and true Uncirculated pieces are virtually unattainable—PCGS notes that only a single Mint State 1843 (MS61) had appeared at auction through 2011.
Highlights for collectors and investors:
Grade and service: PCGS AU58 — a choice, near-Mint example with strong remaining luster and only light high-point rub typical for the grade
Mint: Philadelphia (no mintmark); No Motto reverse type
Mintage: 75,462 — limited survival, especially above VF
Population rarity: PCGS Population 3 in AU58; only 3 graded higher
Series significance: One of the toughest Philadelphia No Motto eagles to find in high AU and Mint State, and a key opportunity for registry builders and type/date collectors alike
Historical and numismatic context:
Design: Liberty Head (Coronet) by Christian Gobrecht; No Motto reverse predates the addition of “IN GOD WE TRUST” in 1866
Era: Struck during a period of limited gold circulation and heavy attrition, explaining the date’s scarcity in higher grades
Market perspective: With AU-level examples seldom offered and MS coins virtually off the market, an AU58 represents the sweet spot for rarity, eye appeal, and value
Specifications:
Denomination: $10 Eagle
Composition: 90% gold, 10% copper
Weight: 16.718 g (0.48375 troy oz AGW)
Diameter: 27 mm
Edge: Reeded
Why this coin:
