A low-population Proof Liberty Head Quarter Eagle of exceptional visual distinction, this 1860 quarter eagle is certified PCGS PR66 Cameo and further approved by CAC, with the added prestige of Bass Collection pedigree.
Struck at Philadelphia, this classic No Motto Liberty Head quarter eagle presents the enduring Christian Gobrecht design in richly contrasted proof format. The obverse features Liberty facing left, her coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by 13 stars with the date 1860 below. On the reverse, a boldly rendered heraldic eagle displays a Union shield on its breast, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with the denomination expressed as 2 1/2 D. beneath and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. The type is among the most collected of all pre-1900 American gold issues, prized for its elegant proportions and historic antebellum character.
The present example fully merits its PR66 Cameo designation. Deep reflective fields frame sharply impressed devices, creating the desirable black-on-gold contrast sought by advanced specialists in Proof gold. Both sides display warm golden-orange color with subtle deeper coppery accents at the margins, enhancing the already impressive presentation. The strike is characteristically full for the issue, with crisp detail on Liberty’s hair curls, coronet, stars, and the eagle’s plumage. Surface preservation is outstanding, with only the most inconspicuous signs of contact consistent with the assigned grade. Overall eye appeal is elite and immediately apparent.
Proof quarter eagles of this era were struck in very limited numbers for contemporary collectors and dignitaries, and surviving pieces from the Civil War approach remain prized trophies today. The 1860 issue stands at the threshold of one of the most important periods in American history, adding an extra layer of historical resonance to an already desirable gold denomination. Within the Liberty Head quarter eagle series, Proofs are avidly pursued for their rarity, artistry, and strong crossover appeal to type collectors, gold specialists, and cabinet builders focused on 19th-century U.S. coinage.
This coin’s collectibility is underscored by its rarity in the certified marketplace. With a population of just 1 in this designation and only 112 graded higher, it occupies an elite position for the issue and type. CAC approval adds another level of confidence for quality-conscious buyers, while the Bass pedigree brings notable provenance from one of the most respected names in American numismatics. Such pieces are encountered far less often than their importance would suggest, particularly with this combination of grade, cameo contrast, and pedigree.
A beautifully preserved and highly desirable Proof Liberty Head quarter eagle, this 1860 PR66 Cameo CAC example offers advanced collectors an important opportunity to acquire a scarce, visually impressive, and pedigree-backed survivor from the golden age of classic American coinage.
